History of Beverly Price’s Entrepreneurial Journey

I started my first nutrition private practice which included patient counseling, corporate wellness, community nutrition programs, and public relations for food along with pharmaceutical companies. My colleague and I even wrote a successful nutrition book that was ahead of its time. I sold the business to a like-minded registered dietitian in the community who carried on the legacy of the practice.

After selling the practice I wanted to share my secrets to a successful private practice, so I developed self-directed manuals and conducted workshops around the country for registered dietitians looking to start a private nutrition practice, along with individual business consulting for registered dietitians. I also developed the Jump Start Business school® entrepreneurial curriculum for university dietetics programs and dietetic internships that still use my materials. At the time, I was the only dietitian providing these extensive materials and workshops. Today, so many dietitians have followed suit.

I continued these workshops, along with my self-directed manuals, when I re-entered private practice in 2004 and throughout most of the life of my eating disorders treatment center. During my ownership and operation of the multi-disciplinary staffed Inner Door Eating Disorders Treatment Center, I attained accreditation by the Joint Commission, obtained state licensing as a partial hospitalization program and forged many insurance contracts. In addition to the program development and marketing aspects, running my treatment center prepared me to consult with similar entities and individuals looking to start this type of business.

In addition, based on my history of selling two businesses, I now consult with registered dietitians preparing to sell their private practice. I have also written business-related articles for Today’s Dietitian, along with the Nutrition Entrepreneurs and Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors Dietetic Practice Groups (DPGs).

How Can I Help Registered Dietitians Start, Expand or Sell Their Private Nutrition Practice?

  • Target your market and define your niche
  • Develop or refine your business and marketing plan
  • Hone your advisors
  • Budget and price your services
  • Succeed with or without insurance contracts
  • Sell your nutrition private practice
How Can I Help College and University Dietetics Programs Incorporate an Entrepreneurship Curriculum?

The Jump Start® Business School was created for college and university professors, along with dietetic internship directors, to implement into their dietetics curriculum. Today’s nutrition graduates don’t want to work in hospitals or nursing homes but start a private practice out of the gate…and innovative they are!

Curriculum may be used as a one semester course or as modules to fit your program. This program can easily be implemented to teach your students or interns how to write a business and marketing plan, develop a budget and determine complete requirements of their future dietetic-related business. The program comes with facilitator handbook and slide show along with one FREE student manual/workbook. Volume discounts are given for individual student manuals. Course instructor will receive respective 27 CPE credits listed below for completing the program along with the self-study assessment/evaluation.

Students will learn how to:

  • Distinguish between an entrepreneur and someone who is self-employed
  • Target their market and define their niche
  • Develop or refine their business and marketing plan
  • Hone their advisors, resources, and tools
  • Budget and price their services

Private Practice, Getting That Jump Start Workshop is beneficial for students and interns to attend as it will provide them with practical information about starting a private practice or consulting company. They will be given the opportunity to explore their personal goals and useful tips will be given to begin the process of achieving those goals. Most nutrition programs do not provide business classes for students and most graduates do not understand the finance, management and marketing of a nutrition business. This course will provide them this much needed information and I would recommend it for all students and interns.

Christina C. Costa MS, RD, CNSD Director, Dietetic Internship program Teachers College, Columbia University

Beverly Price’s Private Practice, Getting That Jumpstart is definitely a must-have for those who are just starting out in private practice. All of the essential tools to get started are creatively displayed and explained so that the practitioner can focus on what is important in getting the business off to a good start.

Christine Watson, RD, LDN The Alternative Weigh, South Holland, IL

The difference between a business owner and a SUCCESSFUL business owner is a matter of combining and operating through mind, body and spirit. Beverly gracefully leads you through the process of becoming a "new age" business owner, and before you realize it you are set up and confident enough to begin your journey. This manual is user friendly and a must-read. You will refer to it over and over.

Jacquelyn A. Pressly, RD Private Practice, Warren, OH

I definitely would recommend this course to others. I know more and more of young dietitians wanting to explore the private practice option, and would hope that more dietetic internships offer more experiences in this part of our profession.

Katie Serbinski, MS, RD Mom to Mom Nutrition, LLC, Detroit, MI

What a seminar! So valuable...No dietitian should go into private practice without it!

Lauren Balkin Cohen, MS, RD, CDN New York, NY

I found the forms in the manual to be very useful, especially the contract and greeting forms. The section on insurance billing was also useful. Also learning how to protect one's name.

My students enjoy the Private Practice, Getting that Jump Start manual and have referred to it frequently in class discussions. I believe it is a great fit for our dietetic course on entrepreneurship.
